3 National Championships for Maxxis Riders
7/21/2010It was another winning weekend for Maxxis riders, as Geoff Kabush, Sabrina Jonnier and Catharine Pendrel won national championships on two continents. Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain’s Kabush took his eighth straight Canadian National XC men’s title, while the Luna Pro Team’s Catharine Pendrel won the women’s championship. On the other side of the Atlantic, Kabush’s teammate Jonnier grabbed the French National DH championship. The races were held in Canmore, Alberta, Canada and Val d’Isere, France.
Riding Maxxis Ikons, Kabush was part of the lead group from the beginning of the race, and he broke away in the fourth lap to finish 49 seconds ahead of the next rider, in 1:45:15 hours. "It wasn't an easy win," Kabush told cyclingnews.com. "Those guys are getting stronger every year, and pushing me a bit more. I waited until near the top of the steepest climb and then punched it hard, and was able to open enough of a gap to get away from them. I waited for the right moment to create some separation. I guess old school was able to beat new school for one more year."
Pendrel took the lead early in the women’s race. She finished in 1:37:41 hours, a full five minutes ahead of the next rider.
Jonnier grabbed her 2010 championship through great effort. The current UCI World Cup leader was gratified by her victory: “I am very happy because this wasn’t my kind of track, and I had to work very hard. It wasn’t technically challenging, but the track kept changing with the dust, and the rocks were coming up, and every run was different.” Jonnier’s winning run clocked in at 3:12 minutes, two seconds faster than second place.
