Minnaar Wins UCI DH World Championship
9/04/2012Nine years after winning his first UCI Downhill World Championship, Greg Minnaar has done it again. A longtime Maxxis-sponsored rider, Minnaar prevailed in a close contest to take his second UCI World title at a race held September 2 in Leogang, Austria.
Minnaar’s main run gave him just over a half-second lead, a margin he maintained through the rest of the race. "It's been nine years and this run, it was tough," Minnaar told cyclingnews.com. "I had a lot of pressure today; I was super-nervous. To be honest, I tried to nail the top section and just after the bridge, I lost a lot of speed. I had to pedal hard. But I held it together, in a way same as in the Pietermaritzburg World Cup earlier this season. I couldn't believe I crossed the line in first."
Maxxis riders made the podium in the UCI Junior Men’s Downhill contest as well. Team Yeti’s Richie Rude was second by 3.12 seconds, and Kona’s Connor Fearon took third place by 4.94 seconds.
Maxxis congratulates Greg Minnaar on his UCI Downhill World Championship, and thanks Richie Rude and Connor Fearon for their outstanding performances.
