UHC’s van Poppel 1st in GC at Tour of Britain Stage 2

9/11/2012

With two podium spots by the end Stage 2 of the Tour of Britain, Boy van Poppel held both the lead in the overall general classification and the points leader’s jersey. The UnitedHealthcare rider took second place in the tour’s first stage and third place a day later. The Tour of Britain runs from September 9-16 at sites throughout Great Britain.

Having earned the points leader’s jersey in Stage 1, van Poppel was focused on gaining the GC lead in Stage 2. UHC deployed its well-known teamwork to position van Poppel for a late-race sprint in the second stage, and his podium spot allowed him to take the yellow jersey. “I was very motivated because I had the points jersey, and I knew in the back of my mind that I was only a few seconds away from yellow (gold). So, I did everything I could to try and win today. The team helped me perfect saving my energy during the day, and they brought me into an ideal position to the sprint. I managed to take third today, which was enough to secure the overall lead. I’m happy about the result and happy to have earned this for my teammates,” said van Poppel.

Maxxis congratulates Boy van Poppel on his performance in the initial two stages of the Tour of Britain and wishes him the best in the Tour’s remaining races.
