Motocross

The typical motocross track has rough, rutted natural terrain. There are thousands of locally-based, grassroots motocross tracks across the United States that hold organized amateur races each weekend.

The premier series in motocross is the AMA National Motocross Championship, which is a 12-race series beginning in May and ending in September. Each race is comprised of two motos, with the overall best results of the two 30-minute plus 2-lap motos determining the winner. Modern off-road motocycle racing is done on either a two-stroke or four-stroke motorcycle. The four-stroke delivers a smoother type of power, generally better suited for motocross. The two-stroke delivers a snappier burst of power and is still favored by many for supercross. The trend in the sport is toward four-stroke motors.

Maxxis Tires Used

Maxxis currently makes two tires that are well suited to motocross terrain: the MaxxCross IT, which works well in track conditions that are intermediate to hard, and the MaxxCross SI, which performs well in conditions ranging from soft to intermediate terrain.

Freestyle Motocross

Freestyle is more of a contest than a race, with judges picking the winner. Made popular by the X and Gravity Games, freestyle features riders executing difficult stunts such as backflips for crowds nationwide.

Tricks include the Cliffhanger, which involved using the handlebars, your feet and all of your guts. Maxxis' Adam Jones likes to hit the ramp and immediately bring his feet up to touch the bottom of the handlebars. He next takes his hands off and starts to stand. The more a rider's legs are extended and the more he or she is directly over the handlebars, the better the trick. The Nac Nac is a trick where the right leg is brought from the right foot peg around the rear side of the bike. The leg continues on past the rear fender and the left foot peg. If you can visualize a cowboy dismounting a horse, you'll have the idea.

Maxxis Tires Used

Typically, the track conditions are hardpack, so most our sponsored riders will use the MaxxCross IT.

Supercross

Supercross is off-road racing brought indoors. A typical supercross race is held inside a stadium or dome of a major city - and 500 truckloads of dirt are brought in to build a track. The format of a supercross race consists of qualifying heats, resulting in 20 riders transferring to a main event, which consists of 20 laps. The premier series for supercross racing is the THQ AMA Supercross series which consists of 16 nationwide rounds of racing.

Maxxis Tires Used

Supercross conditions are typically hardpack dirt surfaces. The Maxxis tire best suited to tackle this terrain is the MaxxCross IT. The MaxxCross IT has a low knob height which helps the rider maintain control at extreme lean angles.

Endurocross

Endurocross is an off-road race held entirely indoors. The format is similar to a supercross event, utilizing a starting gate, class heats, and a series of qualifying rounds, with riders transferring to the main event. Obstacles include boulders, rock fields, poles, sand, jumps, and water sections similar to off-road events such as enduros, hare scrambles, and the GNCC series. Endurocross is an invitation-only event for the top off-road racers of Europe and North America.

Classes

Endurocross consists of one class, allowing each rider to choose either a two-stroke or four-stroke motorcycle for competition. During the qualifying rounds, each rider is assigned to a group of ten. Each group then runs a qualifying heat. The winner of each heat race transfers to the qualifier main event, while the remaining riders race a last-chance qualifier (LCQ). The winner of each LCQ then transers to the qualifier main event. The qualifier main event consists of three heat races, from which the first and second place finishers transfer directly to the main event. There are three semi races. The winners of each transfer to the main event, while second, third, fourth and fifth place finishers transfer to the LCQ. The winner of the LCQ Race transfers to the main event. The number of laps for each race is determined after lap times are determined.

Maxxis Tires Used

The MaxxCross SI is best suited for the wide variety of terrain found in endurocross. This tire performs equally well in rocky conditions or soft dirt, both of which you'll find on an endurocross track.

Supermoto

Supermoto is a mix of on and off-road racing in which racers compete on a track that is composed of both pavement and dirt. For this style of competition, a motocross bike is modified to handle both on and off-road race conditions. The AMA Supermoto Championship, a nationally sanctioned series for this genre, consists of competitors in three classes: Supermoto class, for four-stroke motocycles with displacement of up to 450ccs; the Supermoto Unlimited class, which features motorcycles displacing 490cc and more; and the newly formed Supermoto Lites class, which features motorcycles displacing up to 250ccs. The championship structure of the AMA series places emphasis on the season finale. Points are awarded to the top 20 finishers in every event, with first through fifth place points doubled at the championship finale.
