After missing last year\u2019s race due to an injury, Ryan Piplic was not about to stay on the sidelines for this year\u2019s Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno. Riding ironman-style through the longest off-road race in the U.S. is the kind of challenge the Maxxis-sponsored rider welcomes.<\/p>\n
Despite a couple of mechanical issues, Piplic and co-driver Larry Heidler ran in the top five for much of the 550-mile race, following the conservative plan they had formulated beforehand. At the last scheduled pit and chasing a podium, Piplic decided to forgo everything but a quick refuel. An encounter with a large rock forced him to finish the last three miles on bent rims, but he heroically managed a fourth-place finish.<\/p>\n
