McCabe Sets Tour of Utah Record with Stage 3 Win

UnitedHealthcare’s Travis McCabe set a record with his second stage win at this year’s Tour of Utah, the fourth of his career: the Stage 3 victory gave him the most stage wins of any rider in the history of the Tour. The third and longest of the Tour’s six stages was held August 9 in Layton City.

The four-hour, 188-kilometer race was made even more punishing as temperatures soared into the high 90s. But as he told cyclingnews.com, McCabe and his teammates took those factors into account in mapping out their plan for the day: “The team’s strategy played out perfectly. We knew it was going to be a long day and hot, so we didn’t want to take full responsibility overall. The plan was to put someone in the break. We thought that today was the day a breakaway could stick, and we wanted to give opportunities to other riders as well. It worked out really well. Jonny [Clarke] did a great job, and then he got away in the end with Rob [Britton of Rally Cycling]. Again, it allowed us to not take charge until the very last minute, and we used [Sebastian Haedo] to put me in perfect position for the sprint. Then it was just a drag race between Jasper [Phillips of Hagens Berman Axeon] and I.” McCabe and Phillips battled through the last 250 meters of the race, with McCabe taking the lead a few seconds before the end.

Jelly Belly presented by Maxxis rider Ulises Alfredo Castillo again did well, finishing in fourth place for the stage after he and his teammates set a brutal pace in the breakaway for much of the last lap.

Stage 4 of the Tour of Utah takes place August 10 in Salt Lake City. Maxxis congratulates Travis McCabe as well as his teammates on this record-setting victory, and thanks Ulises Alfredo Castillo and the riders of Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis for their fine performances.
