Dakar 2021

    Dakar 2021

The time has come from 3 to 15 January 2021; then Le Dakar will be held again! The 43rd edition will again take place in Saudi Arabia. Race director David Castera promises to present the participants with a completely new course: “The course is one hundred percent new, with not a single kilometer of last year’s route,” said the Frenchman.

Tim & Tom Coronel are pushing the envelope once again and will participate in an improved version of “The Beast”. The buggy is fitted with 37×12.5-17 M8060 8PR 124Q Maxxis tires, “for Dakar use only”. This means that the construction is specially tailored to Dakar and the wishes of the Coronels. The 4×4 profile M8060 is for sale throughout the Netherlands and suitable for European roads. During the Dakar, the quality of the tires was proven to be 100% Dakar-proof every time.

DAKAR 2021: PLACE, TEST AND PREPARE IN QUARANTINE

Tim and Tom – and the rest of the Coronel Dakar Team – have been in Saudi Arabia for almost a week. After arrival, they had to be quarantined for two days before undergoing another covid test. Only with a negative result they were allowed to collect the car in the port.

PHASE 1: THE BEAST DOES NOT SHRINK IN LISTY FIRST STAGE

In the first stage of the Dakar 2021 it was immediately hit. Everywhere Tim and Tom Coronel saw cars with damage, punctures and other misery. The brothers themselves strummed quietly through. No mistakes, no situations, and The Beast did not budge in the cunning stage from Jeddah to Bisha.

PHASE 2: TIM AND TOM BUILD TRUST IN FANTASTIC STAGE

The second stage of the Dakar 2021 was enjoyable from start to finish for Tim and Tom Coronel. Even a navigation error did not spoil the fun.

PHASE 3: THE BEAST HAS TO WORK HARD IN STAGE THIRD

It was hard work for The Beast in the third stage of the Dakar 2021. And so also for Tim and Tom Coronel. In the 403 km loop at Wadi Ad-Dawasir, they encountered a particularly varied landscape, which demanded the utmost from man and machine. “We moan sometimes, but this is what we come for,” said Tom. “This is the real thing.”

PHASE 4: PROBLEMS CANNOT PRESENCE THE FUN AT TIM AND TOM

The organization had already said it: the fourth stage of Dakar 2021 is a fast one. Tim and Tom Coronel were able to confirm this at the finish of the 337 kilometer long stage. Top speed is not what The Beast relies on and a few minor problems along the way also weighed on the speed. The Coronel brothers came to the line with the fortieth time.

PHASE 5: TIM AND TOM CORONEL ENTER THE TOP 30

The fifth stage of the Dakar 2021 was definitely not a cat piss, not even for Tim and Tom Coronel. Despite a series of small problems, the twins crept into the top 30 of the general classification. In the daily result they were the best Dutchmen with the 34th time, 24 seconds ahead of Erik van Loon.

PEACEFUL DAY OF REST FOR TIM AND TOM CORONEL

The rest day of the Dakar Rally has sometimes been more restless for Tim and Tom Coronel. In Ha’il’s bivouac, however, the brothers and the team can enjoy relative peace. There is always work on The Beast, but there are not many details, says Tim. “I am very content.” In previous years it did happen that half the car had to be rebuilt. This is not the case now. “The boys have everything under control,” says Tim over a cup of chicken soup. “I see peace, I see passion and that is what I like to see. I hardly interfered with it either. I always check the wearing parts, especially to be able to anticipate, but everything looks great. ”

PHASE 7: TIM AND TOM CORONEL FOURLESS THROUGH SEVENTH STAGE

The heroic adventures Tim and Tom Coronel do not have to rely on in the Dakar 2021. In the seventh stage they did not even have to get out of The Beast once. Still, it was quite exciting whether they would reach the finish of the 453 km long stage. The car was so thirsty on the stage to Sakaka that they barely made it to the bivouac. “At the finish we still had 24 liters left from the 408.”

PHASE 8: MARATHONE TAPPE MAKES TIM AND TOM CORONEL PROFIT

Being able to rely on yourself in the Dakar, and knowing how to use the material sparingly, is important in the marathon stage. If there’s one thing Tim and Tom Coronel have learned over the years, it’s that. Among other things, that experience has brought the brothers a lot in the marathon stage – the combination of stages 7 and 8, without service in the bivouac. Three places in the rankings, for example, where they are now 27th.

PHASE 9: TIM AND TOM HAPPEN DUST IN THE MOUNTAINS

The ninth stage of the Dakar 2021 was not very pleasant. The route took Tim and Tom Coronel up into the mountains, through valleys and over winding, rocky paths, making it “bumpy bump and dust bite” for nearly 465 kilometers. By driving smart and above all remaining patient, they managed to take another 25th place and won two more places in the standings.

PHASE 10: NO LESS DAY, JUST A LITTLE BAD FOR TIM AND TOM CORONEL

The 38th time at the finish is no longer what we are used to from Tim and Tom Coronel in the Dakar 2021. Still, the tenth stage was not a “bad day” for the twins. They did have a bit of bad luck in the form of a flat tire and they had to drive a little more carefully to prevent even more punctures. “That was a small handicap, but if a flat tire is our biggest problem this week, then I can live with it,” said Tom at the finish of the 342 km long stage.

PHASE 11: BUSY WORKDAY FOR TIM AND TOM CORONEL

That the home stretch is tough was sometimes confirmed in the eleventh stage of Dakar 2021. The penultimate day was, as Tim Coronel described it on arrival at the bivouac at Yanbu, “a real, tough Dakar day”. Tim and Tom had their hands full with it, but managed to set a 28th fastest time, which brought them to 25th place in the standings.

PHASE 12: TIM AND TOM RECEIVE MEDAL AFTER HECTIC FINAL TAPPE

Tim and Tom had hardly any problems for eleven stages, but on the final day of the Dakar 2021 they all came together. “We have been through more in the last 200 kilometers than in the whole of Dakar,” Tom sighed. “It wasn’t about anything at all.”
