UCI MTB World Championships-Maxxis Sweeps Men’s XCO Podium

After a season dominating the top ten at UCI World Cup races, Maxxis’ sponsored riders capped 2018 with an Elite Men’s XCO podium sweep and seven top ten spots in Elite Men’s DH at the UCI MTB World Championships. Nino Schurter took top honors in Elite Men’s XCO, with Gerhard Kerschbaumer and Mathieu Van der Poel joining him on the podium in second and third place. Danny Hart made the Elite Men’s DH podium in third place. The races were held September 5-9 in Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

Schurter took a commanding lead on the first lap of the XCO race, with Kerschbaumer soon close behind. The Swiss native increased his margin in the final lap, winning by 11 seconds. Van der Poel gained the third spot in Lap 4 and maintained his position through the end of the race. “This is definitely a special win, and I would say the best one,” Schurter told cyclingnews.com. “Getting to race here with so many people out there cheering for me was incredible. It was so loud out on the course.”

Hart made his podium-worthy DH run in 2:55.419, followed by Loris Vergier in fourth place; Luca Shaw in sixth; Laurie Greenland in seventh; the legendary Greg Minnaar, whose run was not bested until 28 riders had followed him, in eighth; Troy Brosnan in ninth; and Matt Walker rounding out the top ten. In Elite Women’s DH, Emilie Siegenthaler took sixth-place.

Undefeated in this season’s Junior Women’s DH World Cups, Valentina Höll took a resounding victory at the World Championships. Her 3:39.726 run was ten seconds faster than the second-place rider’s. “I have never been this nervous in my life,” she told pinkbike.com. “I put myself under a lot pressure. After a perfect World Cup season, I’ve just been waiting for a mistake to happen, but it never did. I am super happy. When we started the season in Losinj, I was just hoping for podiums; now I am here. It’s crazy!” Höll’s fellow Maxxis rider Paula Zibasa took fifth place in the category. In the Junior Men’s race, Kyle A’Hern earned second place.

Maxxis congratulates Nino Schurter and Valentina Höll on their victories and thanks all of these riders for their incredible performances in Lenzerheide and throughout the season.
