If you're looking for mountain bike tyres, look to tyre tests for an honest opinion.

“Tread Pattern – Sheds light mud well. Braking is good on hardpack and loose terrain. Tire corners well for a rear tire with the large side lugs. This tire rolls really well.
Rode some loose, steep off chamber terrain. the large side lugs really help this tire hold lines.
For someone looking for light rolling resistance but some better “all weather” performance, I recommend this over a Minion SS, Griffin, DHR II. The large spacings between the treads really allow for some mud to clear.
This tire is even decent in thick mud. It sheds extremely well. A clean tire with smaller knobs will hook up better than a pack tire with tall knobs…
This is a great tire anytime of the year as a rear tire.” – Nathan Parrish, VitalMTB, August 2018

MBR.co.uk rated the Tomahawk a respectable 8/10 in their tyre test:
“The low-profile, aggressive-looking Tomahawk is a new tread from Maxxis and slots into its extensive range somewhere between the fast-rolling Ardent and classic High Roller II.
Cornering traction is good once it’s banked over and those side knobs are engaged…
…On dry trails, the Tomahawk feels fast, and with one fitted front and rear, the bike fairly rips along…
…Wear has been reasonable over the four-month test period — the rear tyre has lost the edge to its centre knobs, but those shoulder knobs are still as sharp as ever, and it will certainly last the summer out (if we ever get one).
…as a rear-specific dry condition tyre it comes recommended.” – MBR.co.uk, September 2016

“The best part about the Maxxis Tomahawk is that it has been manufactured for all types of trail conditions. Thus, you don’t have to worry about the ground being too wet or muddy for your bike. Moreover, thanks to its open space knobs, there are less chances of mud getting stuck in the tyre.
The compound 3c Maxx Teraa ensures lesser rolling resistance and better treadwear. Similarly, the tubeless-ready system has the benefits of a tubeless UST tire without any weight penalty.
The overall speed of the tire is extremely good in fact at times you require additional braking. It also handles rocky trails pretty well.
All in all, the Maxxis Tomahawk is a great all-rounder. Doesn’t matter which type of trail you wish to bike on, this tire will not disappoint you.” – RobotBike.co
