    The Maxxis Custom Camper

    We love a good step-by-step

This summer, we’re commissioning the transformation of a Ford Transit Custom into a true, four-berth campervan.

We’re super-excited about it, and you should be, too. (Did you know, you could win this camper?)

So, we decided to document everything so we can salivate over it together in eager anticipation of its completion in September. Just in time to give away to one lucky winner.

    Van

Step 1: We bought a van

All things great are built from great foundations. That’s why we opted for a brand-new 2021 Ford Transit Custom Limited in Agate Black with cruise control, air con, electric windows and Ford’s multimedia entertainment system.

Worth just shy of £30k in itself, we knew we had a brand-new, solid, reliable foundation to build something special.

    Story 2

Step 2: We cut holes in the van

It made us cry a little on the inside, but omelette and eggs and all that…

So we cut some holes in the Transit Custom ready for the installation of the pop-up roof and the privacy windows at the side and rear.

We also put a filter on any pictures we published because no one needs to see surgery in all its gory detail.

Step 3: We put kitchen units in the van

This won’t be your average camper conversion. Being Maxxis, we couldn’t help but splash a bit of colour here and there, the orange worktop nicely offsetting the Kitline furniture in Hacienda Black.

The campervan now has plenty of storage and its own kitchen, complete with a 2-burner gas hob/sink combo unit, 49L fridge/freezer, and fully equipped with gas bottle, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, as well as onboard fresh water storage.

Step 4: We added the pop-up roof

Early riser? No? You will be if you win this thing.

That’s right, we’ve given it a striking orange roof for that unique look. But seriously, don’t worry, it’s a Skyline pop-top with black gelcoat inside for a perfect night’s sleep. The exterior canvas is Maratime Orange with the scenic upgrade.

Inside the roof is a gas ram-assisted foldaway upper level Rock and Roll bed which can be operated electronically and is M1 tested and MOT compliant.

Step 5: We upgraded the wheels and tyres

We replaced the standard wheels with Fuel Shok custom offset wheels in Anthracite, a style which is brand-new to the UK for 2021.

These new wheels were then clad in decent, comfortable yet capable tyres; our Bravo AT-771 all-terrain tyres.

Besides looking cool as hell, this new setup will enable the lucky winner to easily make it from road to field to mud and back again easily, making these tyres the perfect fit for a camper van which may be used all year round.

Step 6: We added leather seats

We’ve added some gorgeous diamond-stitch leather seats for an ultra-smart, luxurious look and ultimate comfort on those long drives.

The rear seats also extend electronically to become a comfortable and easy-to-use double bed.

Step 7: There are plenty of other bits, too

    Our final touches include:

    • Vinyl Click impact-resistance Gospel wood effect flooring
    • Black and Anthracite carpet lining
    • Full insulation and soundproofing (wink wink)
    • Blackout curtains and insulated cab window coverings
    • Van Pimps side steps
    • Full bespoke matching upholstery
    • A 12V and 240V electrical system with Euro 6 charging system and leisure battery
    • LED lights and USB chargers throughout

Stay tuned and make sure you buy Maxxis tyres for your chance to win; this is a treat you don’t want to miss out on.

Step 8: We will give it away to someone

After all that, once the finished article is complete we’ll wait until the end of September.

What happens at the end of September? The prize draw for the chance to win this customised beast of a campervan will come to a close.

Then, in early October, we’ll draw a winner completely at random out of all the entries. We’ll get in touch with them and, providing we all have room in our calendars, we’ll have their brand-new custom campervan to them well in time for Christmas.

We can't take all the credit

Clarification of the meaning of 'we'

We recognise we’ve made it sound like our 2020 lockdown hobby was building custom campervans… It wasn’t. We’re still tyre experts.

So, when we say ‘we’ in reference to any of the customisation of the Ford Transit Custom, we really mean our car, 4×4 and van tyre distributor, Stapleton’s Tyre Services. And when we say Stapleton’s Tyre Services, we really mean one of their Key Dealers: Carnoustie Garage and MOT Station, AKA Campervamping, who are absolute pros when it comes to camper conversions.
