For regular UK driving, the main (and safest) options available are summer tyres, winter tyres and all-season tyres and they all have their differences: The main difference you would notice is in the tread pattern, where a summer tyre has much more uninterrupted rubber than all-season or winter tyres. These tread patterns have an impact on water dispersal and snow/ice grip, marking a significant difference in performance in various weather conditions between each tyre.

Another one of the main differences between the type of tyres you require all comes down to the temperature – summer tyres work best above seven degrees and winter tyres below seven degrees; it is the specifically formulated rubber compound in seasonal tyres that make them work correctly at optimum times, not just the tread pattern.

The compound used in summer tyres will harden in colder conditions, reducing grip on cold, wet roads, and especially ice and snow.

In contrast, winter tyres stay soft and pliable at low temperatures. They retain grip, and with the help of numerous special grooves in the tread called sipes, they provide improved braking, handling and traction in all winter driving conditions. A typical summer tyre may have around 200 sipes compared to a winter tyre with around 1500. However, winter tyres are made of a softer rubber compound to remain flexible at low temperatures. As temperatures rise, this compound becomes even softer resulting in increased wear and higher fuel consumption.

An alternative to these season-specific tyres are All-Season Tyres. These have a high silica content for low-temperature flexibility and a tread pattern somewhere between a normal summer tyre and a winter tyre.
