Podium joy for LPE at Hilton Park

The opening round of the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship powered by Skye Energy took place at the Hilton Park venue in the Midlands this weekend. The short and tricky track provided challenging conditions for all the riders.

With both Tanel Leok and Jamie Law feeling comfortable coming into the event, the team were looking to start the season off with some solid results.

The morning started with the practice and qualifying session for the MX1 class and it soon became clear that getting a clear lap would be vital to setting a fast time. At the end of the session Tanel had posted a solid time to finish 4th fastest with Jamie suffering with the traffic in 19th.

After the lunch break it time for the opening race of the MX1 season and as the gate dropped both Tanel and Jamie made strong starts but as the field rounded the first corner there was a big crash involving Steven Frossard which took down Tanel and held up Jamie as he had to avoid the number of bikes and riders across the track. Tanel quickly remounted and made a determined charge towards the front of the field. At the front of the field Jamie was riding really well and settled into 7th place early on while Tanel was passing rider at a fast rate and was soon inside the top 10. As the race came to a close Tanel continued to move forward and passing riders every lap to take a well-earned fifth place on the last corner. Jamie continued to ride well but would slip back a couple of place to finish in 11th place due to a pain in his arm following a midweek crash.

The second and final race of the day saw Tanel and Jamie both make strong starts. In the early stages Tanel was running inside the top 5 when race leader Simpson crashed and Tanel quickly moved into 2nd place behind Whatley. Simpson recovered as the race progressed and retook the lead in the latter stages but was unable to shake off the pressure from Tanel as he made a late race charge for the victory and missed out be just 0.6secs. For Jamie the second race of the day saw him work his way up into 8thplace at the finish.

Tanel’s two strong result gave him a well-deserved second overall on the day and in the championship standings with Jamie claim 8th overall on the day. Both riders will now prepare for the second round of the Championship at Lyng in Norfolk on Easter Sunday.

Tanel Leok: in the first race I made a good start but then Irwin and Frossard came together and I hit them in the back and went over the bars and was at the back of the pack. I felt I was riding really well in the first race and charged hard to get back to 5th at the finish. Then in the second race I made an ok start but was riding tight in the opening laps and making mistakes. I feel like in the first race crash I may have hurt my ankle but toward the end of the race I felt better and was pushing to close the gap on Shaun but he was that little bit fastest today. Hopefully we can make some improvements before the second round and come out strong and challenge Shaun more.

Jamie Law: today has been good considering that I had midweek crash and hurt my arm, but in the first race I had a good start in 7th and then got a funny feeling in my arm so slowed the pace and finished in 11th. Then in the second race I had a much better race, although my start wasn’t as clean I pushed all race long and finished in 8th which I was happy with, so now we move forward to Lyng and look for better results.

Steve James – Team Manager: today has been really good for us as a team, coming into the first round of the Championship you are never too sure how things will go. During the week Jamie had a big crash and hurt his arm so for him to get two solid results and 8th overall was a really good result. Tanel rode mega all day long and to score a 5th and a 2nd for 2nd overall was great. It was a shame that he went down after the first corner of the first race and had to push so hard to finish in 5th. Then in the second race he rode mega and towards the end closed up on Simpson and another lap and they might have had a good battle for the win. We will now go away from here today and keep working hard before the next event at Lyng. I would just like to wish Mel Pocock all the best from everyone within our team and hope he makes a full recovery we are all thinking about Mel, his Family, Steve Dixon and the team.
