Strong end to the day at Preston Docks after tough start for LPE Kawasaki

Round 7 of 8 saw the Maxxis ACU British Motocross Championship powered by Skye Energy head to the sand circuit of Preston Docks. The team arrived at the venue looking for strong results and hoping to delay Simpson from claiming his second MX1 crown until FatCats in four weeks’ time.

The day started well with Tanel Leok posting third fastest in the qualifying session with Jamie Law also getting a strong lap time in for 11th fastest.

Following the lunchbreak it was time for the first race of the day and there was to be drama and heartache for the team as Leok’s bike suffered a freak engine fault and would not fire into life for the sighting lap. Due to the rules the team were unable to change to the spare bike and worked until the gate dropped to try and get the machine to fire up but to no avail. With Leok unable to start the race it meant that Simpson was able to claim the title. For Jamie the opening race was to see him make a good start inside the top 10 and quickly begin to progress forward. As the race continued Jamie moved up into sixth place before finishing 7th at the flag.

After the disappointment of race one Leok was fired up for the second race and made a great start just behind Simpson and pushed hard during the opening laps and settle into a solid second place finish. Once again Jamie got another good start and made some quick passes on the opening lap to put himself in a strong position to finish in eight place.

The final race of the day saw Leok make another good start along with Jamie just outside the top 10 and quickly pushing towards the top 5. As the race progressed Leok kept a strong pace to finish in second behind Simpson for 5th overall and maintain a solid second in the championship. Jamie once again rode strong to finish 6th and 6th overall on the day and move up to 9th in the championship.

Also competing at Preston Docks was Ben James in the MXY2 class after missing the previous couple of rounds. Ben started the day by getting readjusted back into the British format and qualified in 27th. The opening race would see Ben ride a solid race to finish just outside the points in 24th. The second race of the day would see him make a much better start and feeling more confident on track, he was able to finish in 18th place and secure his best ever MXY2 result. Race 3 would see Ben put in another strong ride and just miss out on the points in 21st place.

Tanel Leok – “It was a great shame to have the problem in the first race, it was a silly technical fault with the bike but there was nobody at fault. My speed in the other two races was good and in the last race I felt strong but was just riding steady towards the end to save the bike and score the points needed to maintain second in the championship.”

Jamie Law – “Today has been better for me and my starts were better and I was able to put in stronger opening laps and make passes early on. I’ve finished the day with a 7 – 8 – 6 results for 6th overall so it good to get a solid result for the team as they have been behind me all season long and it was nice to give something back to them.”

Ben James – “It was great to be back at the Maxxis today after missing the last couple of rounds I really enjoyed been back racing in the MXY2 class. I had three good races and really enjoyed my riding today and to get 18th in the second race was awesome. I’m now really looking forward to the last round at Fat Cats.”

Steve James – Team Manager – “The day started well with qualifying with Tanel in 3rd, Jamie 11th and Ben 27th in MXY2. Today in the MXY2 Ben returned to racing and scored a 24th in the first race and then got a well-deserved 18th in the second race which is his best MXY2 result and a 21st in the final race for 22nd overall. The first MX1 race was a disaster as we had a problem with the bike and Tanel didn’t start the race and meaning it messed up the chance of the podium today, but on the flip side Jamie then had one of his best rides of the season to finish in 7th. We fixed the problem with Tanel’s bike for the second race and he was able to finish in second with Jamie riding well again for 8th and then in the last race Tanel finished 2nd again and Jamie 6th giving Tanel 5th overall and Jamie 6th overall which is really good. We remain second in the championship and 60 points ahead of third and we just need to score some good points at FatCat to secure second in the Championship and round off a good year. Shaun Simpson rode awesome again today and has done all year to claim the title he deserves it so a big well done to Shaun and his team. Overall we are going home happy, I am so pleased with all three riders for their efforts today and the mechanics worked so hard today so a big well done to Ben, Tanel and Jamie for his sixth overall as it’s his best result for a long time and mechanics Chris, Ian and Minty, plus Keatesy, Jamie’s Mum and Dad and the rest of the teams loyal helpers, thank you all. We look forward to FatCats for our local home round to finish off the year and the season on a high.
