The Welsh Xtrem – Bigger and Better than Ever

The third edition of the Welsh Xtrem 4x4 off-road challenge event was held at Walters Arena near Glyn Neath in South Wales at the beginning of March.

Since the first Welsh Xtrem in 2012, the high-octane three-day off-road extravaganza has gone from strength to strength. Forty-three teams from across Europe came together to battle over 1500 acres of rough terrain and natural obstacles all to achieve the fastest time possible to win a place on this year’s podium.

The qualifying prologue run, held in the infamous Odyssey Arena, tested the speed and agility of all forty-three vehicles taking part, giving teams, marshals and spectators their first chance to experience the ferocity of the 2015 fight. Maxxis-sponsored Team Gigglepin drivers Jim Marsden and Helder da Rocha came out on top after the initial exchanges, leading the way into the night stage that followed. The dash in the dark that followed composed of a tulip nav and a speed section, which saw father and son team, Chris and David Bowler take the honours.

After a fierce first day of competition, Saturday and Sunday saw some of the toughest stages and punches ever to be seen in the UK. Mud, rocks and water were all used to devastating effect, but most challenging were sections of the course that required over 90 feet of vertical pulls.

After a gruelling weekend competing, it was Team Gigglepin’s Allen Sharp and Ben Turpie who took the crown for the second year running. Duncan Smith and Henry Papworth finished in 2nd and Ed Hart and MikeHolliday in 3rd. All three teams that achieved 1st, 2nd and 3rd were running on Maxxis’ most sought after extreme 4×4 tyre, the M8060 Trepador competition tyre, making it the best performing tyre at this year’s event.

The Welsh Xtrem is organised as a fund raising event, with volunteers donating their time to ensure that the weekend runs smoothly, and to maximise the amount donated to charity. Prizes are also donated and auctioned off during the evening celebrations. This year, the Welsh Xtrem chose to support local charities including the Welsh Air Ambulance, The Abertawe Morgannwg Baby Loss Group and Week on the Streets.
