The 2024 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships went down last week in beautiful Andorra. For many riders, this is the premier event of the year and the time to make their mark on history. One of the traditions of this race is the use of highly customized bikes by the athletes, a tradition for which Maxxis lent a helping hand by providing custom hot patches with riders’ names and country flags.
First up, XC riders got after it with the Short Track (XCC) World Championship race. Emilly Johnston, Tobias Lillelund and Bjorn Riley of Trek Future Racing all managed to get on the podium in the U23 Men’s and Women’s categories, earning fourth, third and second places. Dario Lillo of the Giant Factory Off-Road Team also took fourth in the U23 Men, cementing Maxxis’ podium success among the next generation of talent. On the Elite side of things, Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Deceuninck) had a good start to her World Champs with a fourth-place finish.
After some rain early on, the Downhill racers were back to the typical dry and dusty Andorra track conditions on a short and steep course. Eliana Hulsebosch (UNION) and Sacha Mills (Scott Bikes) got Maxxis off to a good start with fourth and fifth place in the Junior Women. Tyler Waite (Yeti Cycles) also saw success in the Junior Men’s, snagging fourth on the day. In the Elite finals, Gracey Hemstreet (Norco Race Division) was back in the mix and earned fourth in the Women’s after a stellar run. In the Men’s, you’ll just need to look a bit closer to find the new High Roller on the podium.
Finally, the XCO Championships closed out an exciting week of racing. Luca Martin (Orbea Factory Team) rode a fantastic race in the U23 Men’s category, taking his first-ever World Championship win on Maxxis Aspen tires. Dario Lillo, Tobias Lillelund, and Bjorn Riley were all also on the podium once again in second, third and fifth places. Emilly Johnston one-upped herself from her XCC finish with a bronze medal in the U23 Women’s XCO. In the Elite Women’s, Puck Pieterse was unmatched, taking the 2024 World Championship title. Anne Terpstra (Ghost Factory Racing) also rode an amazing race, slotting in second.
The 2024 Andorra World Champs was a great success for Maxxis. Congratulations to all who get to take pride in wearing the rainbow stripes!
